Gen13 #50: F
The worst of all possible worlds!!! Terrible writing AND terrible art in a double sized issue at an inflated price of $3.95!!! Quick! Go buy a dozen copies before they're all gone - a comic this bad only comes around once every 50 issues!

And in case you missed it, this page will no longer be updated. Wanna know why? Then check this out...

Well, given that #50 was the book that caused me to stop reading Gen13, you can imagine that I thought it was pretty damn bad. And you'd be right. The issue was rife with inconsistencies, bad characterization, crappy art, lame dialogue and quite possibly the weakest plot for a double-sized issue I've ever read. Oh yeah, and I had to pay an inflated $3.95 price tag for the privilege to endure it! Here are just SOME of the fucked (and yes, I said fucked and not #%$##^ or fugged - this book was that bad.) up things in the book:

The Cast: 4 pencillers, 7 inkers, 2 writers and 3 colorists for this drek!?! Man, WS needs to dock some paychecks! The ONLY good thing about this ensemble was that I got to see a few pages of Williams inking Benes, other than that the art was consistently inconsistent and crappy. The only reason you EVER have fill-in writers and artists is when somebody falls behind, so either Lobdell got the story in late or Benes got the pencils in late (or both) so the book was pretty much doomed from the start.

Rainmaker's Eye Thingy: Okay, I'll just ignore the question of where she GOT that new costume and ask wtf was up with that eye thing?!? It kept disappearing and reappearing!!! Check it out, one panel it'll be there, the next it will be gone, and then it's back again!!! Hey guys, this isn't some crappy 'zine for sale at a local con. Try and make the thing look remotely professional!

The Villains: I cannot even believe that they had a daemonite lord saying "You want me to pump up the volume so we can get jiggly with it?" or "D'oh!". He's Hel-Freaking-Spot, not Homer J. Simpson. Here's an idea for the WS writers, actually go and read those old school issues of Wildcats (back when your books could be found in the top 50) and see what he's like. He's far too smart to think that 'jive talking' with Kat would work. He's a villain on massive proportions!!! Lex Luthor wouldn't say "Come with me if you want to save your homies." and Doctor Doom would never use the term "dope ride" or "run with your crew". Helspont wouldn't either.

And TAO...ohmygawd I cannot believe what they did to him!!! Neither Lobdell nor Layman have the talent to handle TAO and neither should have tried. Does somebody want to explain to me why he wanted to destroy the world again? Or why he felt that spending several months with the Gen kids posing as Mr. Lynch was the most efficient way to do it? Or when he got so stupid that Grunge could disable him by using school kid logic. Yes, he super-smart but that doesn't mean that if you tell him "I'm rubber and your glue..." that smoke starts pouring out of his ears and he becomes incapacitated like some old-school computer on Star Trek that Captain Kirk has confused. Geniuses understand idiots and illogical actions too, you know. Lame, lame, lame.

In Jokes: A constant burr in my bra during Lobdell's entire run. This "We know we're in a comic book" crap has to stop. Like 5 issues ago. It destroys all credibility and turns it into a parody of a comic book rather than an actual comic book. It might work if Gen13 had ALWAYS known they were in a comic book and that was part of the schtick (like Ambush Bug or She-Hulk) but they haven't and it doesn't. It's acceptable in one-shots, dream sequences, etc. but it has no place in the regular series.

Kat's Age: Yet another brain fart from Mr. Lobdell, claiming Kat is only 20 years old. Now I realize than comic book time is different than 'real' time, but I'm only using facts/criteria from the book. In the mini-series, Kat was just one year away from graduating (which would normally make her 20-21 years old right there) and it took place over the summer. Issue #0 took place six months after the mini-series. Issue #17 is the first time they celebrated x-mas and the holiday season was depicted once during the Arcudi/Frank regime and again just a couple of issues ago. So that's 3-4 years of story line right there and I haven't even covered the events that occurred BETWEEN issues #0-17! Even if you assumed Kat is super smart and skipped two or three grades, she'd still be at least 22-23 years old. For some reason, Lobdell feels no reason to pay attention to what's previously transpired so I guess (using his logic) Kat was actually 15 in the Genesis compound and, like, 12 when she started college. And that would make Roxy, what, 11 or 12 when she was brought into the Genesis Project? Plus, waaaaaaaay back when Sarah Becker was still editor, she listed off the ages of the characters and Kat was 20 back then, over 30 issues ago! Why not think things through or would that require too much effort?

Okay, that's enough slammage for my last ever 'JenActive Says' for Gen13. I didn't even get into other stuff like how Kat couldn't possibly have any idea what's happening to her since she's a unique case in medical history or how she has pockets on her outfit in one panel and then, a couple of pages later, they're gone! Magic Clothing - woohoo!!! I'm bored with slamming this title. I was bored with it months ago.
